Assignment #14

Here is a poem I wrote about my friends and I when we were young, we'd go to the beach and just howl at the moon like wolves hungry for purpose and knowledge... tell me what you think.

Happy Holidays, or better yet, Merry Christmas :)

Séance

Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul
To liberate from my person,
To set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception.
I inhale you like fog,
Let you see inside of me
All the tangled confusion,
Overpowering reality of life
Left at my car door.
I walk on new land
Where the end of the earth lies.

Should I continue?

Only you will know,
As I drink you down
Until what I have lost has been filled
Or until where
Or who I want to be
Is here

Amongst this close conjunction of dear members
Who with me
Show no fear to howl at the moon
When we go insane,
Intoxicated with the thought of love
That knocks us over like tidal waves,
Which wash away all of our impurities;
Makes us real,
Makes me drown in what life ought to be,
A never-ending story of events shared
With my other selves
Who help me unite into one giant séance.

They come down holding my hand
Reassuring me that I will never be alone
Or speak to only myself
Because we are one in the world of immaculate stars
And will be placed in this sky forever.

“To liberate from my person, To set free to fly high Above the clouds of perception.” I like this line the most. I believe that we all have our own niche and that we have friends we feel most comfortable with. Everybody has friends that you’re not scared to be yourself around. Everybody has a place where they feel safe and free to do as they please. For me this special place is wherever as long as I am with the person I love most. In other words I feel that with this line you are implying that you are breaking out your shell. You are being yourself, the Mr. Donoso not everybody knows about!
I believe the tone is relieved and relaxed, I think that you know that you are used to this feeling of being yourself with your friends and that you are relieved because you can get away from more stressful events such as school, parents, cleaning your room. This is time dedicated to yourself, “To liberate from your person.” I also think that you are excited to get this feeling again it sounds like this isn’t the first time you have done this. So it sounds like you know what’s going to happen and your excited to share this experience with your friends again.
“I give to you my soul” this is an example of personification. You can literally give someone or something your soul. This line is imply that you are giving the night (I think) your soul in other words your self letting the night carry you through to be free from worries. “Intoxicated with the thought of love That knocks us over like tidal waves” in this line you are also using personification. The thoughts of love can’t knock you down. You are implying that the thoughts of love are overwhelming and sometimes to much for a human to handle on their own.
I do like this poem only because it’s about your past and you are talking about fun with your friends. There is a lot I can relate to. Although throughout this poem I was extremely confused. From what I understood you are speaking to the night. “Only you will know, “As I drink you down” Who are you talking to? There are several lines I don’t really understand aside from this one. I can’t comment anyone’s comment; I am your first comment! Yay! Lol good job Mr. Donoso!

“With my other selves
Who help me unite into one giant séance.”
I had no idea what a séance was, so I looked it up. Since a séance is a group of people trying to communicate with spirits, these lines mean that you are trying to find out who is your true self, since the other sides of your personality are helping you communicate with your “dead” self. I think you’re trying to say that lately you have not been acting yourself, and you need some self reflection to “revive” yourself.

“Overpowering reality of life
Left at my car door.”
With these lines, the poem has a free flowing and carefree mood to it. What I mean by this is that you have a “whatever happens, happens” attitude. You leave all the troubles of life behind in your car and leave to better things.
“I inhale you like fog,”
This piece of figurative language is a simile, since you’re using ‘as’ to compare the person you are talking about to fog. When you are walking through fog, you are actually walking thorough a cloud. So you could mean that they are so soft and airy that whenever you are near them, you get so intimate that you feel as if you are breathing in their spirit. Also, by inhaling them, you are putting them inside you, so you could be saying that they are pouring out their emotions and feelings to you.
Yes, I like this poem. I love all the figurative language in it such as the line about the fog and the line about being placed into the night sky forever. Also, you listened to our pleas and made a poem about self reflection and not love.
I agree with nicole <3 aka Fav Student! when she said that there were lines that she didn’t know who you were talking to. When I was reading it, I thought you were talking to one of your friends, but when I got to the end I was really confused because you were talking about being alone and holding hands. So I wasn’t really aware who you were speaking about.

First and foremost Muhahaha I commented before Devin :). Such satisfaction I feel right now let me sit and take a pause of victory. Ok, ok now for this wonderful poem. I liked it how it had its own wild side to it. Like with the line, “Show no fear to howl at the moon when we go insane.” Showing how the poet and his members of his group could howl at the moon and go insane. How they had their blood rushing so fast that they just let their wild side out. Without a worry or a care. I love that instant rush, where you can’t control it but just take to the animal side we all have in us. Like once when I was chasing my friend who took my hat. We were in a field; all I heard was my heart beating and the rush of the chase sprang on me. As I wanted to catch them and then when I got close I tackled them to the ground. It was such a sensation to feel where I just an animal after their pray. I also liked it because like Nicole said, “it is about past fun times with friends.”
An example of figurative language is in the line, “Because we are one in the world of immaculate stars and will be placed in this sky forever.” It is a metaphor and is showing how the people in the poem are like immaculate stars. Like stars that will never die out and are perfect, the pack will never die out. The poet’s voice is wild and reckless, yet kind. To imagine this sort of pack or group the poet is in where he doesn’t feel alone and he never will be. But they can go crazy and wild, like most people do with friends. Or as my friend says, “mindless around friend.” Like people act themselves around friends and don’t even have to think of what to say or what to do next. You’re not trying impress anyone your just hanging with friends.
The line, “Which wash away all of our impurities.” Means that the way this pack howls at the moon, and thinks of love wash away or make them forget the bad things they have done. That is also another feeling I love. When you do something like draw or sing that makes you forget or washes away everything unclean. Whether it is for a moment or years that you forget. Just feels so good to be clean. Like when I am stressed or feel unclean I draw. I let out all my emotions into my drawing. Also the occasional poem to get out emotions. Or even like this poet being with friends just hanging can wash all the troubles away. Life problems are fixed with laughter, chocolate, and friends.

Assignment # 15 Matthew Madonia

"They come down holding my hand
Reassuring me that I will never be alone"

Well these lines remind me of my middle school graduation. We walked off the steps together, promising to never forget one another, and to this day I still have those friends. it is nice to know that they kept there promises. I spent eleven years in the same school as my two best friends, and the funny thing is, we don't go to the same school anymore, but we are closer then ever. They reassured me that I would never be alone, and they kept their word. Though I now have new friends, one of them in particular I wouldn't trade the world for, but I always know that if I need someone to be there for me, to call my friends from middle school. Because it has been two years since that promise was made, and the covenant between us is good to this day.
The mood of the poem is reminiscent, the author is remembering his days hanging with his friends, which was also mentioned in the pre-lude to the poem. " Show no fear to howl at the moon, When we go insane" these lines pretty much simplify the whole definition of teen spirit. Wild and crazy, and just desiring to have fun. As you may have noticed I enjoy relating poems to my personal life, so I will once again use an example of myself and my friends. Well, when me and my friends get together we like to go insane, we haven't hurt anyone yet(I think), but we like to have a good time. So the author is definitely remembering his teenage days when he was writing this poem, because there are few moments in life outside of your teen years when you are this care-free.
" I walk on new land
Where the end of the earth lies. "
I interpreted these lines to be a metaphor about the beach. The Earth is round and does not literally have an end, but the earth as in the soil ends at the beach, followed by an apparently infinite sea. So to a person who does not know better, the beach is the end of the Earth, because if the world was flat, it would end at the ocean.
I liked this poem, I could relate to it very well. I have learned to absorb the moments around me, allowing my senses to be saturated with the smell of teen spirit, because in a few years I will be introduced to the real world, and these moments I spend with my friends doing nothing at all in particular and still having an incredible time will become harder to find once I am older. Plus, I would like to write a poem about my teenage years when I am older, so I need to hold onto these memories. This feeling of endless possibilities, this desire to find my true self, this freedom that I posses when I lose myself in pleasure. I must never forget what it is like to be a teen.
I agree with Ryan when he said, "had no idea what a séance was, so I looked it up. Since a séance is a group of people trying to communicate with spirits, these lines mean that you are trying to find out who is your true self." because this is the whole purpose of being a teenager, finding your true self.

Line: I inhale you like fog, Let you see inside of me; All the tangled confusion, Overpowering reality of life; Left at my car door.

Oh, what feeling and vicious hunger you have, Mr. Donoso! I’ll be sure to check your teeth the next time you talk to me! I just want to take certain precautions so that I don’t end up like little red ridding hood! And I’m going to check to make sure you’re not an imposter dressed up like an innocent high school teacher.
For once in your poem, you seem young and eager to grasp certain qualities and quantities of life. If I could ever get out of my house at night and get to the beach, I would probably do the same thing, except I would saver the moment longer and expect a few female wolves to wonder by.  But I doubt that our intentions would be the same. You and your friends were howling for enlightenment and understanding of reality, which you said was “overpowering.” On the contrary, I would go to the beach and howl and weep for freedom from reality! Or at least for a little while longer. But what tickles me is that you insist on inhaling the moon, like fog. And you want it to see the entangled confusion of reality that was inside you! WOW!?! I know that there was a certain urge for the things you and your friends wanted and needed, but come on! Why would you want to inhale the moon? Why not just jump up there and bite the crap out it, like a wolf would do to a deer or a moose?
But I understand your simile of breathing in the “moon” like “fog”. It’s almost like inhaling the toasty scent of a nice warm cup of hot chocolate on a cold brisk mourning, the feeling just fills your body up with joy and happiness, relief and sometimes a giant séance. After reading this poem, I agree with Leticia when she said, “when you do something like draw or sing that makes you forget or washes away everything unclean.” That is true, especially for me. To wash away unclean things, I listen to slow jam and R&B and techno music. All in all, I enjoyed reading this fang-less not-eating-the-student-while-disguised-as-a-innocent-English-teacher poem. It’s nice to hear that most adults were wolves when they were, supposedly, teens. Once more, Mr. Donoso, you are able to compare your past with some of my, and many other teens’, present emotions of life!

Lines: To liberate from my person,
To set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception.

These are my favorite lines because it show that the writer want to be free from reality and go a new land to do what ever he wants to satisfy his life and existence. “I inhale you like fog, Let you see inside of me” this is a metaphor because he saying that he inhaled his friend so he could see the turmoil and confusion in side him. Also “I walk on new land where the end of the earth lies.” the earth doesn’t have an end because it’s not flat. The tone would desire because the writer wants to remember his teen life when he wanted to escape from reality to satisfy himself. I like this poem because it talks about his teen years when he was wild and crazy and how he wanted to imagine a better life. I agree with Leticia when she said, “when you do something like draw or sing, that makes you forget or washes away everything unclean.” I find this true because when I take my mind of something and find something else to do I completely forget about it.

“They come down holding my hand, reassuring me that I will never be alone.” This line showed me that at times spirits or things around you can be by your side and never leave you alone at times. At times, if I had a friend away from me I know that they are by my side and I know that I’m not alone. I think the tone of this poem is care-free and just having fun and living your life. I got this from the line: ““Overpowering reality of life left at my car door.” It meant that at the moment he had a lot of things going on in his life and when he left his car door he just let everything let go and he got it off his mind so those things weren’t going to ruin his fun time with his friends or wherever he was going or doing.
Some figurative language I found in this poem was “I give to you my soul.” You can’t really give someone your soul and you can’t really give them what is inside of you. Another example was: “When we go insane,
Intoxicated with the thought of love that knocks us over like tidal waves.” This is a simile and interpreted as when you’re drunk you can’t walk in a straight line or when you’re high you aren’t really thinking. It seems to me that this person, when they think about love they get all lightheaded and feel like they have butterflies in their stomach and the waves are the ones bringing them down. One other example of figurative language that I found was: “Because we are one in the world of immaculate stars and will be placed in this sky forever.” This is a metaphor and it seems like he is saying that we are like stars and that where we live is like the sky.
In my opinion, I thought the poem was okay. At first I didn’t get it but once I read it over and over again I kind of got the idea. I think that when you write poems about love that I tend to like them more. I’m not saying that this poem was bad but I didn’t like it as much. I liked the figurative language and it seems like you were looking back at your memories as a teenager and it was nice to read how crazy you and your friends were. I had to disagree with Ryan when he said that you finally listened to their pleas about self-reflection and not love because in my opinion I thought love is a better topic. But I agreed with Matt when he said that you were trying to find yourself back then and it seems like you have. I think everyone goes through a stage in their life espically as teenagers where they don’t know who they are and they want to find that out. To sum it all up, I liked this poem but I have read better from you! You still did a good job! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TOO! :]

“That knocks us over like tidal waves, which wash away all of our impurities;” This is my favorite line of the poem because I like the image I get from this line. I see the waves coming in clean of all impurities and leaving the shore full of all the people’s impurities. Basically in this poem, the poet discusses a past in which he visits the beach with his friends to cleanse himself. I also like the part where the poet said, “Let you see inside of me all the tangled confusion, overpowering reality of Life left at my car door.” I like this line because it shows how he was able to arrive at the beach and completely forget about all his life’s troubles.
I think the tone of this poem could be considered gratitude. The poet continuously speaks of how wonderful his friends were for him, especially when they went to the beach, and about all the great things they did for him. Too me, it sounds like the poet is thanking the beach for always being there for him. For example, the poet says, “Makes me drown in what life ought to be, a never-ending story of events shared with my other selves who help me unite into one giant séance.” These lines mean that these times made him feel like a normal person, which doesn’t sound like it happened very often. In a way, I think he was thanking everything that contributed to these times for helping him to just have fun and forget all his worries.
“I give to you my soul.” This line can be considered figurative language because you can’t literally give your soul to anyone. The author just meant that his emotions could be easily changed by many factors during this experience. “I inhale you like fog,” is a simile; the poet is comparing taking in the experience to inhaling fog. “Let you see inside of me.” This line is considered figurative language because in actuality, nobody can see inside of a person; the poet meant that he would completely show and express all his emotions. “That knocks us over like tidal waves,” is a simile because he’s comparing the strength of love to the strength of a tidal wave.
In my opinion, I like the story line in this poem and I love the figurative language as well but I can‘t say this was my favorite poem. I think there was a lot more to this poem that the readers couldn’t interpret. I feel that while the poet reads it back to him it makes sense but to others who don’t know what he know they may feel they aren’t getting the entire story. However, from the parts of the story that we get to read, I like this poem. But I do have to agree with the others; there are parts of this poem that are rather confusing.
I agree with Karen when she said, “To sum it all up, I liked this poem but I have read better from you! You still did a good job!” I also agree with Devan when he said, “It’s nice to hear that most adults were wolves when they were, supposedly, teens.” It is definitely nice to know they were crazy once too.
MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. DONOSO! 

“Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul
To liberate from my person,”

This line is very captivating, because we all have that time when we want to have an “out of body” experience and escape ourselves for just a moment. This may be to escape the hardship of daily life, or to see from a different viewpoint.

I think the tone of this poem is relaxed and reflective, because the poet just wants to let go of all of their hindrances and be set free. Also, the poet is reflecting on stories told by friends.
“A never-ending story of events shared
With my other selves”

“Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul”
This is a metaphor, I believe comparing the human soul, to something you can give and receive as a gift. I think that this means that the poet wants to go into cruise control and not have to take responsibility and worry, so he is putting the control in someone else’s hands.

“To liberate from my person,
To set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception.”
This is a hyperbole, because you cannot be free from being yourself. Also, you cannot fly above the clouds or for that matter fly at all.

“I inhale you like fog,
Let you see inside of me
All the tangled confusion”
This is a simile comparing the sky to some kind of x-ray that can see inside of you and see the confusion that lays inside (which might be why the tone of the poem might be confused). Also, this line reminds me of those foggy mornings before school, and everyone is trying to breathe all of that humid air into their lungs because it is a refreshing feeling. This might not be safe in a city with high amounts of smog, however.

“I walk on new land
Where the end of the earth lies.”
This is a hyperbole comparing the sandy beach to the end of the earth, because there is no end of the Earth if it is a sphere. I think this means that when the poet goes to the beach, they are so free that they forget everything else going on in their lives, making it new land. This is similar to Sophie’s secret spot in the bushes. I too have my own personal location right behind Sawgrass Ford.

“Intoxicated with the thought of love
That knocks us over like tidal waves”

This simile is comparing the thought of love to a tidal wave. When you are young and you think of love, the subject might be so overwhelming that it makes you lose control and figuaratively, knocks you over.

“A never-ending story of events shared
With my other selves
Who help me unite into one giant séance.”
This is hyperbole, because no one can have a never-ending story. Also, the poets friends are so close and personal, that they become an extension of them, similar to clones.

“Because we are one in the world of immaculate stars
And will be placed in this sky forever.”

This is a metaphor comparing everyone in the world to a star, and only the special ones will be placed in the sky forever, meaning that they will be remembered for years to come.

I liked this poem because of the use of figurative language, although I did not completely understand it. I also like how you provided us with some background
information before the poem. My friends and I also have a time to howl at the top of our lungs. We call it “lunch”. I like how you included some good childhood memories, because we are all trying to hold on the last few years we have before we are adults.

I agree with Devon when he said, ““It’s nice to hear that most adults were wolves when they were, supposedly, teens.” because it somewhat reminded me of that 80’s movie, Teen Wolf, with a pre Back to the Future Michael J. Fox. I also agree with Crazygurl when she said “Or even like this poet being with friends just hanging can wash all the troubles away. Life problems are fixed with laughter, chocolate, and friends.” because who doesn’t like to laugh and eat chocolate with friends?

Title: Séance

“Here beneath the moon I give to you my soul to liberate from my person, to set free to fly high above the clouds of perception.” This was my favorite line out of the poem because it’s pretty much explaining how you could be yourself around the people you care about and know who like you for who you are. For example, when Portia talks to Brutus about is I’m-so-confused-I’m-going-to-go-emo feelings in the play “Julius Caesar”. Brutus had showed his soft and kind-hearted side that we hadn’t seen earlier in the text.
I believe the tone used in this poem was a calm and cheerful because of the fact that you have a stress-free, part-time life when your with your friends. It also gives you a chance to show your true colors because like you, the poet, had said, “I give to you my soul to liberate from my person”, which is somewhat stating that when your apart from your friends you hide some of the qualities that make you who you really are.
A part of figurative language that I thought was interesting was “Because we are one in the world of immaculate stars and will be placed in this sky forever.” The line is a metaphor comparing how people resemble stars. Exactly how stars are always out in the ocean like night sky his friends are always there as well. I liked the poem even though I was a little skeptical and hesitant towards what the poem was really about when I the following line, “Intoxicated with the thought of love that knocks us over like tidal waves”. Seemed to be that you were talking about somebody that you felt was more than a friend, but not quite a passionate lover.
I agree with Leticia when she stated, “When you do something like draw or sing that makes you forget or washes away everything unclean”. She’s absolutely right because when I’m feeling sad or just having a bad day I also like to listen to music such as Alicia keys or Babyface (they’re my therapists, just ask them =]) Both talented singers have somewhat of a talent to make me realize why I feel the way I do at the moment.
All in all, I liked the poem very cheerful and great way to end blog commenting for a while. It has that nice friendly and holiday like mood. Just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Years Don Oso…That means Mr. Bear =]

I really like this poem because it is like wondering if you should move on with this path or not. When you look back, you see your friends backing you up, encouraging you to move on and never to give up so that one day you will be one of those stars one day. The lines, "Amongst this close conjunction of dear members
Who with me
Show no fear to howl at the moon"
is saying how your closest friends will also help you, no matter the dangers or circumstances and you will do the same for them. They will not be afraid of the unknown future, instead look at it, like another day that has yet to been seen until it is over and another day begin again. The lines, "Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul
To liberate from my person,
To set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception."
is a metaphor because the soul is a part of you and you cannot give that away but you can give part of who you are away, to help that person achieve and see things in a different way. These lines also say how one more different view can change almost anything so long as you take it seriously and see it through in the right way. The tone of this powm is friendship, enduring to achieve your dreams, expressed in these lines, "Makes us real,
Makes me drown in what life ought to be,
A never-ending story of events shared
With my other selves
Who help me unite into one giant séance." I like this poem because it reached out to me, expressing how friends can make the difference of you reaching your dreams or not and to reach high above what you expected but not alone, but with the friends that helped you climb towards that dream. They will forever remain in your heart... Even if they are ten thousand miles away from you, part of their spirits is with you, always. I agree with Crazygurl about how some of life's problems can be fixed by simple things like love, friendship, and favorite food. However the more life hurting problems are not cured easily, they usually take lots of will-power and strong friendship bonds that nothing can break it. After reading this poem, I thought of my saying, "When does a friend become more than a friend? When the bond becomes so great that nothing can destroy it, not even death or the lapse of time. Where does this bond lies? No, not the heart, but the spirit, where it can remain in yours forever." Have a happy holiday Mr. Donoso, hope you have a great time with your family.

"Where the end of the earth lies.Should I continue?Only you will know."
With what you wrote as the introduction of the poem I believe that you were saying your friends will help you find where you're going.A good friend should know your dreams, hopes, and fears. And if you are afraid to take that leap of the edge of the earth to your destiny they will be there to give you a gentle shove. These are my favorite lines because the bring tension with the big gaps in between them.

"Intoxicated with the thought of love. That knocks us over like tidal waves.Which wash away all of our impurities."
My favorit piece of figurative language in this poem would have to be this. The similie compares bad feelings and sad thoghts being put asie when you think of love to how waves drag out the dirt and trash from the beach.

I think the tone of this poem is reflective and apreciative. You show reflectin in lines like-"Until what I have lost has been filled. Or until where. Or who I want to be. Is here." You reflect on what your purpose is here on Earth and when will it be discovered. You show appreciation in the lines- "They come down holding my hand. Reassuring me that I will never be alone." These lines make me think that during this time you were glad to have someone feeling the same way you did, unsure and wanting to know it all.

I really like this poem because I could relate to it because me and my friends talk about life. Unlike you and your we dont howl at the moon though. But I still understand trying to find out what your going to do with your life and trying to find a good job and stuff like that.

I read the first few comments and Ryan said he thinks you were tring to communicate with the other parts of your personality when I think you were just talking with your friends.

“To liberate from my person, to set free to fly high above the clouds of perception.”

When I read this quote above it reminded me of the holocaust and how the Jews wanted to be free. What I think the author means by this quote is that he is trapped inside his body and he wants to get out, he wants to be free, he want to get away from his old self and start over fresh.

I think that this poem means that the author has shared a great childhood with a special people. “A never-ending story of events shared
with my other selves” when I read this quote I thought that the author has grown up with his friends and they have a bond so strong that when he is with them he feels like he is with a lot of himself.

The tone of this poem is calm and sad. The author is remembering some of the good times that he had with his friends, he is remembering that one extremely sad moment when him and his friends went their separate ways when the graduated.

While reading this poem is spotted and line that demonstrated hyperbole. “Intoxicated with the thought of love that knocks us over like tidal waves” thoughts of love can’t knock you over.

I agree with Nicole because she was able to see that the author was reminiscing on the great times that the author had with his friends.

"All the tangled confusion,
Overpowering reality of life
Left at my car door." I think this meant, you escaped reality as soon as you closed your car door and this little adventure to the beach is an escape from reality. The tone of this poem is pondering and reminiscent of the days you spent with your friends. Some figurative language is "A never-ending story of events shared
With my other selves
Who help me unite into one giant séance." This is a hyperbole because a story cannot be never ending. I agree with Alan when he says that Life problems are fixed with laughter, chocolate and friends because i like all of those things as well and they do help.

This poem is about friends who plan to always be there for each other while they look for what they want from life. The tone is relieved, ready for the unknown and happy. I do like this poem for it kind of reminds me of my friend and I. We don’t really know what’s in store for us in life, but we are ready to face it since we have each other. Also how we are crazy together, staying up and playing with the owls.
The line “That knocks us over like tidal waves,” is the figurative language of simile, for it is comparing them to tidal waves. How love pushes them over and fall upon itself just as waves do. This line shows what young love can do, you get so into it, and ended up crashing/falling in on yourself. Just love isn’t a small little wave, it’s a giant tidal wave.
I agree with Devon “It’s nice to hear that most adults were wolves when they were, supposedly, teens. Once more, Mr. Donoso, you are able to compare your past with some of my, and many other teens’, present emotions of life!” It is good when a teacher tells or shows us that they too were once like us, wild and (sometimes) carefree. Same with parents, and its not just the “better your life” kind of stuff, it makes them seem more alive, and real.

And a Merry Christmas to you too!

WOWSERS!!!! This poem is really intense, but I liked it. At first I didn’t really understand the poem, but then I realized my printer only printed out half of it. Anyway, so when I read the whole thing it all came together. I like this poem because I can relate to it. For example when you’re around other people, for instance like not your friends you seem to be more quite than you were to be with your friends. Around your friends you can be wild and crazy and they wouldn’t think you are out of your mind.
There was one line in this poem were my heart actually began to beat faster and faster. When you asked, “Should I continue?” It wanted me to keep reading and see if you were really going to continue or not. Also all of the figurative languages really made me get into the poem. For example when you said, “Intoxicated with the thought of love. That knocks us over like tidal waves.” I noticed that was a simile. Anyway that part really caught my eye because it is very true. Even thinking about love, can hit you like a brick wall. Also I agree with Bre when she said love it not jus a little wave it is a tidal wave. Love is not jus a little thing. it is very important and contains lots of emotion and feeling.
I notice that in this poem your tone was very exhilarating. Just reading by reading this poem it allowed a thrash of adrenaline to travel through my body. I really enjoyed reading it. Also reading this poem made me think of a time when I was with my friends and we were playing manhunt. I was hiding deep in the woods thinking no one would find me, but just then I heard someone coming, so I took off like wind. I thought I was never going to stop running, but then I looked behind and he was gone. I had lost him! This poem allowed me to have the same anticipation to when I was reading this poem.

What a great way to end the semester than with an exciting poem like this!
Good job! Mr. Donoso.

“I give to you my soul, To liberate from my person, To set free to fly high, Above the clouds of perception”. This line stood out to me the most because it shows a sort of freedom that one feels when your around friends you trust. It makes me think of when I am around my friends and the feeling I get of being able to express myself fully without being embarrassed. How I can just say anything in the world and it is accepted like a good job application lol. It makes me feel free and worriless of saying or acting weird because when I am around close friends, they understand, appreciate and accept the way I act.

The tone of the poem is a feeling of freedom and comfortableness that anyone can relate too. “To liberate from my person, To set free to fly high” this shows how he the author can act freely without worries because he knows that no matter how may goofy or stupid things he says, his close friends wont care. Once you get to that point of a friendship, you have already accepted and accustomed yourself to you friend’s habits and actions.

“I give to you my soul”. I believe this is a form of a hyperbole because someone can’t actually give someone his or her soul. I believe the poet is trying to express the feeling of freedom that he gets when around his friends. His soul symbolizes the human problems and stress that the poet carries with him. When he gives his soul away, he’s releasing himself of all worries.

“I walk on new land, where the end of the earth lies.” This is another from of a hyperbole. You can’t actually walk at the end of the earth because the earth is round and you will walk around in circles so the earth never ends. The poet expresses the feeling he gets once he is around his friends. Once the poet is with his friends, he leaves reality behind and enters a zone of comfort.

I did like the poem because it is something I can relate to. I have the same feeling when being around my friends. Having the freedom to express yourself and the certainty that no matter what life throws at you, your friends and you will come through it together is a wonderful feeling. So in a way I understand what the poet wrote and expresses through this poem.

I agree with what Nicole said about having friends that you’re not afraid to be around with. I am pretty sure everyone has friends that let you express yourself fully. I believe having a friendship is one of the greatest gifts that humans could have because without friends we would be one lonely species. =)

“I set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception”
This line is an example of a metaphor. The poet is not flying, like one would imagine a bird or airplane flies; rather he is in a state of mind. He is soaring above the ideas of perception, or thoughts and concepts. This is intended to mean that the poet expects to move towards his highest level of cognition.

“Overpowering reality of life
Left at my car door”
This line is an example of personification. The reality of life is not to be taken literally, it is not something you can hold or even put down. I believe that what the poet means in this particular line is that life is no longer real to him in that moment. He feels that nothing he does only at this time has circumstances; perhaps he feels that life is not necessarily an illusion, but that it now is not real in the sense that it isn’t true.

“Until what I have lost has been filled
Or until where
Or who I want to be
Is here”
This line was truly my personal favorite. It caused me to think deeply; I believe the poet is implying that he wants to “find” whatever he has lost. Of course, the poet doesn’t mean for this to be taken literally. He means that he intends to become someone significant, to complete his life and fulfill everything he pursues. One of the numerous reasons I enjoyed reading this line was because, just as many other people, I strive to become someone. I intend to work towards becoming exactly the person I desire to be, just as the poet expresses in these lines.

An example of a simile is the line, “Intoxicated with the thought of love, that knocks us over like tidal waves”. This line is comparing the effect of the thought of love to tidal waves. Many tidal waves are intense, and have a considerably strong effect; the comparison that the poet implies is that the thought of love can make one ponder so deeply that it has splendid effects on that person.
The tone of this poem is relaxed and peaceful. For example, the line “They came down holding my hand, reassuring me that I will never be alone.” I assume that the poet is speaking about his friends, the people that accompany him on that night. In many cases, when someone knows that another will always be by their side assisting them, they attain a feeling of calmness, or of satisfaction, thus this proves the tone of the poem to be relaxed and peaceful.
I agree with Nicole <3 aka Fav Student! when she says that everyone has a place that they aren’t afraid to be themselves, or a particular person they’re never frightened to act like an idiot around. I believe that everyone has that person, whether you’re a loner and you have to make up a friend, or it’s a significant other that truly exists. Whatever the case, all of us don’t have to hide who they truly are around at least one other person that they associate with.
In all honesty, I truly enjoyed reading this poem. I admired it most, out of all that I’ve read by you (although I’ve only read three). It allowed me to think deeply about the realness of life, spending time with those you love, and achieving true inner peace. As you stated it was about the times that you and your friends would spend together, it made me think that when I grow old, I’ll reminisce on the times that I enjoyed with my loved ones. This poem has a great impact on me, and inspires me to live life to the fullest and exceed my potential for learning. The fact that this poem was uniquely difficult to interpret made the experience of reading it more challenging and enjoyable for me.

"Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul
To liberate from my person,
To set free to fly high
Above the clouds of perception."
This is really an interesting way to start the poem, its a little confusing to me but I think it has something to do with love. Something to do with being free when you’re with someone you love. No worries or ideals to try to live up to. Your putting yourself out there, the real you. I think this poem has a self-reflecting, love-embracing feel.
One example of the reflection is
"Fly high
Above the clouds of perception.
I inhale you like fog,
Let you see inside of me
All the tangled confusion,
Overpowering reality of life"
Examples in this include "fly high above the clouds of perception." this shows that you’re feeling or realizing something above that of the regular senses. Another example is let you see inside of me all the tangled confusion" this shows that you have deep confusion inside of you and your reflection letting yourself in to unscramble the mess of your life. There are many examples of figurative language including stanzas, metaphors and more. One example of a metaphor is "Makes me drown in what life ought to be," this is a metaphor because you cant really drown in life, you can say your drowning in life or your emotions but that is all a metaphor just to say things are tuff. Truthfully I don’t really like the poem, it’s kind of confusing and I think giving the subject at the top, the poem could be much better. I don’t know what to suggest to make it better I just know I don’t feel like the poem captured me. I think that I agree with Nicole when she says that everyone has a place that they aren’t afraid to be themselves, or a particular person they’re never frightened to act like an idiot around. I know that I feel free a lot of the time to just be who I am; I especially feel like that when i am with my best friends or my girlfriend.

"Here beneath the moon
I give to you my soul"
I believe this line means the author is devoting himself to an individual. His soul represents everything about him, loyalty, trust, etc.

The tone of this poem is affectionate. The author is willing to do many things for this person. In the end he describes how powerful their feelings are. This line shows this well: "Intoxicated with the thought of love
That knocks us over like tidal waves."

I have to use this line again, because it is my favorite in the poem. "Intoxicated with the thought of love
That knocks us over like tidal waves." This line is a simile, because love is not physically strong, especially not enough to knock anyone over. But the thrill of love gives them the feeling of being knocked over, for love is strong emotionally.

I agree with Devon when he says “It’s nice to hear that most adults were wolves when they were, supposedly, teens.”, because you never think of adults in their teen days. They were apparently the same as us now in our teen days, well, almost like us.

I like this poem because it’s clear and understandable. It doesn't beat around the bush, it gets straight to the author's point.
