One Second
Hidden candle inside my heart,
how you love to mock me.
You burn too fast and melt so slow,
It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit;
And yet I try to find the right light
to set you off inside.
To what avail?
Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul.
Like a fireplace you bring me warmth;
But naturally you burn me,
You scar me inside out,
Do you realize what you are doing?
Whoever said that love hurts
was unfortunately right,
Although they forgot to mention
the brighter side,
The true and only reason
why anyone would voluntarily
kill themselves;
Because, in one second,
transformed by one smile
Can make all the pain disappear
and for once in a person’s life,
you are happy.
So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow.
You may continue to go out,
but I also have persistence.
You may keep me dark inside for a billion years,
But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.

Title: One Second
I have to say that this is the best poem you’ve written. The poem seems to me as if the poet was talking about his inner conscious being the burning candle. In other words, he thinks less of himself every time he loses a lover. The lines I like the most are “ So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow. You may continue to go out, but I also have persistence. You may keep me dark inside for a billion years, but I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” These lines can work as an inspiration towards someone who has been hurt emotionally and literally wants to give up on life. I liked those lines because it reflects on those who don’t give up trying to find true love regardless the time they do in fact find “it“. The title pretty much summarizes the poem itself. It can take one second for a love to go away and one second for it to hit you.
The figurative language I liked was the personification of “Hidden candle inside my heart”. The inner conscious of oneself was being compared to a candle that lights up every time you find someone you care about, and lights off unsuspectingly. To sum everything all up this was one of those poems that actually do make you think about where you’re standing and what you inner conscious expresses towards such a subject like love. I’m pretty much the first comment, so I can’t really agree with anybody, but I do agree with this poem. Love does hurt, especially when it comes down to that one person that gives you butterflies after every kiss, hug or moment shared. =( Love can be a beautiful disaster, but there’s the thing…it could be beautiful.

Line: “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul.
Like a fireplace you bring me warmth;
But naturally you burn me,
You scar me inside out…”
Do you know how many times I had to read this poem to actually understand one stanza! But I like the challenge of deciphering this enigma piece of poetry. At first I was thinking if there was really an actual flame burning inside of the speaker, but it was only a metaphor stealing the image of a flame. In the line the I confiscated, the speaker used personification, saying that the torch was “agitated”. I never knew a flame could get “itchy”, but I do know that most flames can get pretty “fired up” at times.
The next fiery wall that held me back was the question, who in the world was the speaker talking to? Was the speaker talking to the audience or to this flame in side of him? Somebody’s a little crrrraaazzzyyy! I wonder how a person would look if they started talking to their chest? Hah hah!! Pretty hilarious, if you ask me.
So after I figured that the speaker was talking to torch in his heart, it made me wonder how it got there and why is it still there? The speaker said that he was transformed by a smile. Ooooooohhhhhh wwwhheeeeeyyyy!!! WHO smiled at who? Another one hooked. I’m guessing that that flame in his heart might be that crispy char coal ember about to bar-be-que the speaker, like a piece of red snapper. JK! What I’m really guessing is that there was an imprint of that smile left behind as the “smiler” left the speaker behind and the flame in the speaker’s heart could be a symbol of hope that he will get another chance in love. I guess that’s where the speaker’s tone of hurt, revenge, and determination comes from.
O.K. where’s crazygirl is she here? Hellloooo!! It would be nice to see what see blogged, you know what I mean, to read, to analyze, and to criticize. JK! Since she’s not here right now I’ll leave a message saying that I agree with Stephanie when she said, “Love can be a beautiful disaster, but there’s the thing…it could be beautiful.” Compared to this poem, that’s exactly what the speaker is going. Bottom line, I like this poem also. But why must all your poems be on emotions. Why not make them on life threatening situations that almost ended your English Teaching career. OOOhh, or the poems could be on some of the most embarrassing moments of the poet. That would definitely be hilarious!

"One Second"
"The true and only reason
why anyone would voluntarily
kill themselves"
This line is saying that love is the only reason anyone would kill themselves intentionally.
I believe that this is implying that love is so strong that it can impair our common sense and good judgement.
"Whoever said that love hurts
was unfortunately right"
I think the tone of this poem is sad and also frustrated. The poet is referring to the popular saying, "love hurts", and is acknowledging that this saying is indeed true.
Yes! One of those extended metaphors that I love so much!
"Hidden candle inside my heart,
how you love to mock me.
You burn too fast and melt so slow,
It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit"
This is a metaphor comparing the poet’s relationships to candles. If I buy a quality candle, it will melt down slowly. If I buy a substandard candle, I would hope for it to melt down slowly, but most likely it will burn. When a candle burns, it finishes very quickly. I think the line would have been better if you had written, “You melt so slow and burn too fast.” This line is now in chronological order, because the attraction builds up slowly, and suddenly burns up and the flame is extinguished. Perhaps this is not what you meant to say, but I think it would sound more exquisite.
” So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow.
You may continue to go out,
but I also have persistence.”
This line is a promise to the “glow” that if it continues to mock the author, he will continue to try to keep the candle lit.
I agree with Devon when he said that the next poem should not be about love and emotion, and should be about a funny story for comic relief. This was a good suggestion, but the love and emotional figurative language poems are the only ones I can see us taking seriously.
I liked this poem, mostly because of the extended metaphor. I love extended metaphors in poems, because it relates each stanza together, with the same comparison made repeatedly. Good job on this poem and keep it up!
One Second
"And yet I try to find the right light
to set you off inside." I think this means you are searching for the right woman to give you the right kind of love. I think the tone of this poem is frustrated. An example of this is "how you love to mock me.
You burn too fast and melt so slow,
It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit;
And yet I try to find the right light
to set you off inside." Some figurative language is "The true and only reason
why anyone would voluntarily
kill themselves;"I think this means that love is so strong that people are willing to torture themselves with wrong woman after wrong woman, to find that specific love that they are looking for. I like this poem because you look at both sides of love, the good and the bad. On one hand love can hurt a lot, but when you finally find the special someone whose love is just right, it brings you much joy and can make all your pain disappear. I agree with Alan about the good use of the extended metaphor.
~Greg C.
I liked this poem it basically said everything that I feel about love. Like the line says, “But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” How it may mock you and it may hurt you in the end. But everyone keeps looking and searching for love because even though it may last a short while. In the end you’re happy. Your life has hope and love in it and though in the end if you get cheated or hurt it was worth it. It was worth that time, that one second of happiness for all the pain you go through. To connect to a person body and soul and feel love in your heart is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. I know in my past my heart has been stepped on, stabbed, and even torn apart, but I wouldn’t lock it away from the world. I will never close up inside and let no one in. Because it is those few seconds of precious moments I keep near and dear things I would even give my life for. Nothing is like that and nothing will ever replace it. So I could wear my heart on my sleeve and get hurt all the time, but at least I had those few moments and love in my heart once.
The line “And yet I try to find the right light to set you off inside,” means that he tries to find the right person who will make him feel right inside. Like someone who will love he and he love her and his heart doesn’t get hurt. There is a figurative language with the line, “Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me.” It isn’t meant to be taken literally because there is no candle in the poet’s heart. But it means that the light or feeling he gets when he is loved or loving tends to go away when he gets hurt. So the poet is saying his heart mocks him which is an example of personification. His heart can’t really mock him but because it hurts him he feels it is mocking him. The author’s tone is feeling hurt but at the same time stating that it is all worth the hurt. It is worth getting hurt but having those few moments in life. I totally agree with Devin, “Love can be a beautiful disaster, but there’s the thing…it could be beautiful.” And Devin tell you what next week I will write before you do just this week has been hectic for me so I just been off my game but don’t worry I will be back.
One Second
“Whoever said that love hurts was unfortunately right”
I think that in his quote the author is saying that he has been hurt by someone that he had feelings for. Apparently the authors’ lover didn’t feel the same way for the author as the author felt for her.
I like this poem because it starts out as a sad poem because the author talks about how his heart has been burnt and then as the poem starts to end he says that there is a bright side to love. This is when the poem starts to get happy.
I think this poem means that it takes only one second to loose a love and one second to gain one.
“One Second”
“Because, in one second, transformed by one smile can make all the pain disappear and for once in a person’s life, you are happy.” This was probably my favorite line in the poem because it is very true. I felt like I had a connection because many girls when they have a bad breakup they feel sad and down about it. They just need a smile from someone that they care about a lot and that makes some of the pain go away. Also it feels like when you have people around you that are happy or when you are optimistic about things you could be happy too. The tone of this poem in my opinion is not giving up and determination. “But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” This shows that throughout the poet’s life that flame in his heart has always taken control and left him burning inside and hopeless. But in this line it shows that one day he will have his second of glory and then he will be mocking the flame.
"Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me. You burn too fast and melt so slow, It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit" This line shows figurative language in being a metaphor. This line reminds me so much of the poem we read in class “Love without love.” To me it was like if you have romantic love, the love stays burning but it can slowly melt and if you have the lustful love it burns fast and it melts fast also. “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul.” This line is also a form of personification and a metaphor because an agitated torch can’t actually burn things in your soul and most people don’t have cobwebs in their soul.
In my opinion, this has been one of my favorite poems. I liked how you compared love with a candle burning you, how much pain it could cause. It is true that love does hurt but we need to eventually learn from it and know that everything happens for a reason. I also liked this poem because it showed how much people go through just for love and how much one relationship could change and affect people’s lives. Another thing I enjoyed about this poem is that when things are going bad and we are hurting we shouldn’t let it get to us because in the end things will get better. I had to disagree with Alan and Devin, I think you should just stick to your poems about life and love because it seems like those are the ones most people enjoy. Those poems are more realistic and have more emotion than the comical ones. But I do agree with Stephanie and Shantey when they said love is a beautiful disaster because in relationships you can go through your touch times and fights with the one you love but at the end of the day when you have someone by your side loving you is such a beautiful thing. Good job Mr. Donoso! I can’t wait for more love poems =)
One Second
“Because, in one second, transformed by one smile Can make all the pain disappear and for once in a person’s life, you are happy.” This line is my favorite in this entire poem because it is discussing the poet’s reason for loving after it has crushed it many times before. Anyone who has been in love before understands this quote so well. After two people end a relationship, it seems their world is going to end and that they will never find love. Time continues and they slowly begin the healing process. Each and every person that has experienced this love will tell you that they would do it all over again because their time together was worth all the pain.
The tone of this poem is determined. This is obvious because throughout the entire poem the poet is saying that no matter how hurt he becomes or however short it lasts, he is determined to love again. He also discusses that he wants to be loved because it makes him blissfully happy and all prior pain is completely gone.
“Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me.” This line is a metaphor because it’s comparing the poet’s love to candle. This line is also a personification because it’s giving the heart and love human characteristics. “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul.” This line is continued metaphor from lines one and two. It is comparing the torch burning to the love that hasn’t been experienced recently. This line is also a personification because its giving a torch and soul characteristics that, in reality, aren’t possible. “So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow.” This line is a personification because in actuality, a glow can’t mock anybody.
I love this poem; it is one of my favorite poem so far. Reading this poem made me think of the quote, “It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.” This poem has the same message which I find to be a very profound topic that was well discussed in this poem. (Or should I say artwork?)
I agree with Karen when she said, “I also liked this poem because it showed how much people go through just for love and how much one relationship could change and affect people’s lives.” Love can completely change people, for the good and bad, yet people will never stop loving others.
One Second
“Whoever said that love hurts was unfortunately right, although they forgot to mention the brighter side”
This line in the poem really gave me a perfect idea to what the tone of the poem is. The point that this line is trying to get through is that love has its downfalls at times, but in spite of the downfalls there’s still those moments that share happiness and bliss. The tone of the poem is a frustrated one with a little determination and forgiveness. The reason I say this is because the author does indeed hate being love and getting hurt but on the good side that’s what keeps him going, knowing that, that one person who ruins everything is the same person who gives them that warm feeling and keeps him appreciative of being in love. Another line where the author extends the meaning of this line is when he/she says, “The true and only reason why someone would voluntarily kill themselves”. What the author means by this line is love hurts so bad it’s the equivalent to suicide. The pain and suffering of love can take its toll in any second minute or hour of being happy. The author couldn’t have used a better line like that to illustrate the theme of this poem.
I have spotted a couple of uses of figurative language in this poem. The first one is from the start of the poem when the author said, “Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me.”, which shows personification. First of all no human I know can carry a candle in their heart, it would burn them alive, or let a candle “mock” them. What the author is trying to say is that the candle that holds the flame which is the passion for their love is constantly burning in bliss or in sudden hatred and it is pushing the lover between love and hate. The second is also personification which is, “Agitated torch, you burn cobwebs in my soul”. No torch can be agitated or irritated and souls do not carry cobwebs. What the author is trying to say is that the bothered passion he has keeps the evilness off his soul. I also found a simile when the author says, “Like a fireplace you bring me warmth.” The author is comparing the comfort this person brings them to a warm fireplace and the warmth it gives off in the cold. There are plenty more signs of figurative language but these three are the ones I would like to point out.
I agree with Karen because all the poems you have written on love and life are well written and illustrated mentally. The reason I think this because of the way you describe ones emotion, there is no better way to describe it in words than the way you do it. Along with Karen, I would have to disagree with Alan and Devin, your poems are best when they are on the subject of L-O-V-E!
I personally enjoyed this poem. By far, it was the best well written poem describing a substance of love. It perfectly defined the ups and downs of love with good and strong figurative language to back it up. A lot of people can relate to this because in a relationship, matter of fact, in life nobody is perfect, and when mistakes are made, pain is suffered as well as consequences. I personally can relate to this poem because there have been times when I found being in love to be the best joy in the world and then in one second it all comes falling down like a dynamited skyscraper. Mr. Donoso your work seems to always amaze me. Keep it up.

This poem was very good. I liked how the words flowed together even though it wasn’t a rhyming poem. Also even though all you write about is love, this was very different and unique. I also liked this poem because this can prove how people will actually wait for love and even got hurt many times just to have love. This poem made me realize that the author has been hurt before or has loved and lost and is fine with it because there’s more love out there in the world. I really enjoyed this poem reflected on a movie I watched but I don’t remember what it’s called but, it was about this guy that was always getting hurt and when he thinks he finds the “one” he tries to settle down and as soon as he do he gets hurt, and his friends always pick on him saying that maybe love isn’t for, but he kept trying and trying and at the end he had a wife and his friends went old and lonely.
In this poem I noticed a lot of figurative language. This line was a personification or a hyperbole, “Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me. You burn too fast and melt so slow, It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit”, because the author can be comparing the hidden candles his pain that he feels inside and when the author said “it’s no wonder to me you never say lit”, that the author can be saying her ignorance is making her a bad person and he’s to the point where she don’t impress him. Or this can be taken as personification because candles can be in a heart; no one can burn or melt. “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul.” This is a personification because your soul can’t be cobwebs, agitated torch can’t actually burn things in your soul, and this is a metaphor because he’s comparing agitated torch to the lady’s touch or love. “You may keep me dark inside for a billion years,” this is a personification because no one can live for a billion years or be trapped in the dark.
The tone of this poem can be determined in lines “Whoever said that love hurts
was unfortunately right, although they forgot to mention, the brighter side, and the author seems really determined and knows what he wants in life. Also it seems like no matter what the other will always have a good out look on life because he knows thru all the pain life will get better. So he stays pretty confidence.
I would have to agree with Karen and Sarto when they said “all the poems you have written on love and life are well written and illustrated mentally, “ because most of love poems are about lust and every none sense stuff and your poems, your poems Mr.Donso has meaning and it reflects on 99.9% of people that comments your poems. =D but I still stay strong when I say write something more than love its winter get into the spirit and write some thing seasonal , of course if you want too. [lol] =]
The line “Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me” is an example of personification, as no living person has an actual candle burning inside them. In my opinion, I feel as though that when the hidden candle is lit, the author is overcome with the feeling of love and happiness, but when the candle goes out, the author may feel like he did something wrong, or isn’t good enough for the one they love. In my own personal experiences of my “hidden candle” burning out, I would feel as if I sunk beneath rock-bottom and messed up everything in every way possible.
In the line, “The true and only reason why anyone would voluntarily kill themselves; because, in one second, transformed by one smile can make all the pain disappear and for once in a person’s life, you are happy”, I think the author is going back to the feelings I felt after I lost love, but is saying how it’s worth it just to be in love. I like this line because it has a gesture so small, a smile, over-throw a very serious act of killing one’s self, to portray the significance of love. In one of the comments, marked anonymous, the person said that this poem reminded them of the quote, “It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.” I completely agree with them, for I think that is the message of the poem. The third stanza of the poem, in which I quoted most of, completely reflects on that idea.
Overall, I feel as though the poem gives off a contemptuous tone, especially in the last lines, “you may keep me dark inside for a billion years, but I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” I liked this poem, in that I can relate to what the author is saying. I know what it means to have loved and lost, and to appreciate the love I receive.

"You burn too fast and melt so slow,
It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit"
I understand the meaning of this line, though I cannot relate to it. I've never been in love so I'm unfamiliar of how the heart works in a relationship.
The tone of this poem is frustrated. The poet is fed up of the pain love causes. Each flame mentioned is love, but each flame burns him, causing pain and suffering.
"Hidden candle inside my heart,
how you love to mock me.
You burn too fast and melt so slow,
It’s no wonder to me that you can never stay lit"
This is a metaphor because most relationships get serious too fast, but never last, or so I've heard. This is a comparison to the candle burning too fast, and never staying lit.
I agree with Alan when he says the line: ” So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow.
You may continue to go out,
but I also have persistence.” is a promise to the "glow" that if it keeps mocking the poet, he will still try to keep the candle lit. In other words, if he keeps on having failed relationships, he will still try to find the right person.
I do like this poem. It has deep thoughts buried in its metaphors and similes. I'm glad I picked up on them right away.
“Whoever said that love hurts
was unfortunately right.”
Sorry to be so depressing, but when I read those lines something inside of me twisted since I have felt that. I don’t know about you, but when you find out someone doesn’t like you for more than a friend when you wish they would, your heart becomes weak until it shatters into pieces. You wish to press rewind and never hear those words that brought such sorrow into your life. Sometimes the worse part at that moment is knowing you have to go on despite what happened. Thankfully, there are other highlights in one’s life, but right there, right now the pain is enormous, colossal.
Other lines that made me think: “I have thought this before!” are: “Because in one second,/ transformed by one smile/can make all the pain disappear/and for once in a person’s life/you are happy.” You may be living through the most horrible day of your life, feel the whole world and everyone in it is against you, but when you see a sparkling smile that captivates all your senses, sun shines through the clouds and makes your surroundings luminous. How much can happen in one second! However, one second can also bring all your dreams crumbling to the ground when your love walks away from you for forever. (What a way to end the paragraph that was so light-hearted to begin with.)
The tone of the poem is melancholy. An example of this is found in stanza two, which, by the way, is one of my favorite stanzas, “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul. Like a fireplace you give me warmth; But naturally you burn me, You scar me inside out, Do you realize what you are doing?” The pain she causes him is so major that he wonders if she is aware of it.
The first two lines of the poem show personification since a candle can’t literally mock someone. I’m not completely sure that what I’m about to say is right, but here it goes: in the line, “Agitated torch, you burn the cobwebs in my soul,” a metaphor is found. The author is comparing his lover to a torch that burns all his confusions, or in other words, makes all his troubles and confusions go away.
Without a doubt, 100% sure, I love this poem. It demonstrates to almost perfection the feelings of a hurt and broken heart. It describes the wonderful moments in love (“Because, in one second, transformed by one smile can make all the pain disappear…”), but then it shows the downfalls of it (“You scar me inside out”). I agree with what many other people have written. They said that love can be so amazing and frustrating at the same time, but one keeps on living and loving for those special moments. An example of it is found in Stephanie’s blog, “Love can be a beautiful disaster, but there’s the thing…it could be beautiful.”
To be perfectly honest I didn’t even understand the poem until half way through it, but then it began do get clearer and made perfect sense. But anyway.. "Hidden candle inside my heart,
How you love to mock me."
When I first read this line it confused but intrigued me, I was very interested in the metaphor of it, because clearly you did not have a candle in your heart, but what could you mean by that? So I kept reading, I which case I say that your first line was definitely good at grabbing the attention of your reader. Over all I would say that this poem has a very optimistic tone to it, in the beginning it talks about the frustration of the candle going out and the pain of it burning when it is lit but towards the end you say that none of that matters, that the second of happiness that love brings you is worth the pain and the darkness. The last stanza where you say "so go ahead, mock me, merciless glow." it shows defiance and as the stanza continues you see the defiance is because of hope, hope brought on by that single second of happiness. There is a lot of figurative language in this poem, including the metaphor I previously stated. The line "you may keep me dark inside for a billion years, ..." is a great example of a hyperbole, you will not be alive in a billion years so obviously this is an exaggeration. Over all I think the poem is pretty good, I have read poems that I think were better by you but this one is a good poem too. I really like the overall message of the poem and I feel like it puts you in a hopeful, happy mood.
I must say I agree with crazygurl's comment when she said "The line “And yet I try to find the right light to set you off inside,” means that he tries to find the right person who will make him feel right inside. Like someone who will love he and he love her and his heart doesn’t get hurt." I think that she says it in an odd way with he's and hers and all that but I still understand what she is trying to say is that you need to find the right person to love to light your candle and keep you warm.
One Second
“You burn too fast and melt so slow”
What I understood from this poem was that a guy probably likes a certain person but she doesn’t understand him yet. The line above probably shows that the girl catches his words fast but gets them too slow meaning that he expresses his feeling for her in such a descriptive matter that the girl thinks he is making fun of himself and puts him down, “you scar me inside out” is an example that explains that she hurt his feelings.
At the beginning of the poem I would have to say that the tone is confused for her actions because at first he explain what this girl is doing to him, “You scar me inside out”, and then “Do you realize what you are doing?”. In the middle he is trying to understand why this is happening to him when he tells the girl his true feelings “Whoever said that love hurts was unfortunately right” this can be that he is understandable. At the end he feel sorry for her for that she lost someone valuable like him and tells her that he is going to have the last laugh, “But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then”, he is feeling satisfied.
“Like a fireplace you bring me warmth”- smile, every time you’re with her, you feel nice and cozy inside, and the feeling of being warm on a cold snowy day drinking coco and covered up while watching your favorite movie.
“You burn too fast and melt so slow”- metaphor, the girl may hear what the guy has to say like fire burning a match stick fast but doesn’t comprehend and takers her time like ice melting in a cold weather (green house effect for example) to truly understand the meaning that the guy is telling her about his feelings.
I liked this poem because it talks about a guy that likes this girl but I guess she either is not into sensitive, romance stuff or that she just doesn’t get it to its fullest. In the poem the guy finally realizes the meaning of love, that it hurts but as finding the meaning he also discovers why people commit this kind of suicide, because it’s worth it, watching her face, smiling, it can even pass in one second, but it blocks all your worries away and even in the saddest moment you can become happy.
I agree with what Stephanie said about that your love can leave and hit you in one second because if you just don’t that shot, the 100 million, billion dollar shot, then all your life changes for ever. Taking risk in life such as this one is what makes life so interesting, but your not just going to take them and knowing that your are going to succeed but as well as having faith on whatever you do.

“One Second”
“You may keep me dark inside for a billion years, But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” I absolutely adored this line of the poem. It is motivational to me because I have been feeling very “burnt out” lately. The line just helps me to be stronger and not let my “candle” bring me down. I can beat the “flame” even if only for a second but that one second is fulfilling enough to complete me for an eternity. Just knowing what it is like to love is enough to keep you going.
The tone of this poem is determined. You are determined to find the perfect love no matter how long it takes. You are not going to let your “candle” bring you down. When you wrote, “So go ahead, mock me, merciless glow. You may continue to go out, but I also have persistence. You may keep me dark inside for a billion years, But I will have my second, and you- I will mock then.” you basically told that candle of and said it couldn’t hold you down you would conquer all.
The entire poem was an extended metaphor (which I insanely love). You’re speaking of a candle in your heart burning and being extinguished. The candle was a symbol of the determination in your mind to not your thoughts beat you down. You used personification when you said, “Hidden candle inside my heart, how you love to mock me.” You give the candle the ability to mock you, though; in reality it could never do that.
I really loved this poem. It is one of my top five favorites now. It really hit me in a way that few of your poems have. It hit me right in the heart. It helped me come to a realization about some of the things I have been going through lately. Actually, I thank you for writing something that is really going to help me. Every time I start letting the “candle dominate over me I will remember what you right and get it back together.
I agree with Stephanie C. when she says, “These lines can work as an inspiration towards someone who has been hurt emotionally and literally wants to give up on life.” That is exactly what this poem has done for me. All in all, Bravo! Mr. Donoso, Bravo!
