Dedicated to my Amelie Poulain...
Goodbye
How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes.
These past few moments have been the best,
And the credit can only fall on you.
I wish to say so many things,
But the time and option of words are few.
So in this smile I want you to know
That in my heart you’ll always be.
Your memory, like my shadow, will follow,
Throughout my life until eternity.
Thank you so much for who you are
And for making me live with so many surprises.
Promise me if I go too far
You’ll remember me like you do sunrises.
But hush, my Love, and let me be
The time to say goodbye has come.
Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,
Or else return into your arms because you are the one.

Goodbye!
“How much is it supposed to hurt

I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes.”
Wow mr.d this poem is quite touching, as I began to read it I started to see that I was supposed to be for a woman by the name of Amelie Poulin. I wonder who she is ? This First Stanza in this poem packs so much emotion and commitment it in. I think that this stanza is very true that even when thinking about saying goodbye is like a train hitting you; It’s terrible painful. As I think more and more about the words you have written I begin to see the many different uses of figurative langue you use in your poem
“Your memory, like my shadow, will follow,”
This is the line that sticks out to me the most because its saying that when she leaves you will want to stay with her so your shadow will follow here which we all know is somewhat impossible.
“Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,”
This line also stands out to me because it holds a lot of power, to me I think in the poem that you are trying to say goodbye to a love. The you can not go on any longer living the way you are living even though you obviously love the woman. I think that this sounds like the girl cheated on your our is making poor choices in your relationship and you cant take it anymore so your asking her to set you free so you can live your life and feel what its like to breathe.
“But hush, my Love, and let me be”
And even though she obviously doesn’t want you to go you are consoling her and telling her she will remember you.
Truthfully Mr. Donoso I have probably said this 900 times but this is my favorite poem. It makes me think in two perspectives. One is that he man was cheated on by the woman and he wants her to let him go. Another way is the death of someone. I think this because you say that just let me go free and I think that the person is dying a basically telling the person that it is there time to be gone. So let them go at peace.
Kudos Mr. Donoso I really really really loved this poem.

Title: Goodbye
Line: So in this smile I want you to know
That in my heart you’ll always be.
Your memory, like my shadow, will follow,
Throughout my life until eternity.
I am stricken with the painful memories of an unconnected relationship between one of my past loves and I. I choose not to call her an ex-girlfriend because she didn’t dump me and I didn’t dump her. We were slow to get together, but we were quickly separated. If you’re curious, all this good sweet stuff happened to me in the eighth grade. Yes, the eighth grade, and I was pretty good with the ladies then as I am now. We shared many similarities and we both thought that we were going to cruse the world together with style forever. Later that year I had to choose which high school I wanted to go to, but she had already decided. Sad to say, I ended up coming to ATC and she went to South Plantation. What luck! We both knew that our time was coming to an end, so like little mice, we played, while the cats were away-but not too much! No MISTAKES were made, OK! Those were the best of the best moments that I ever had and no other lady has come to break the record. And guess what, I’m not going to let them! What I mean is: “I’ll let them come in the house, but I won’t let them touch my trophies.” I’ll let them set their own trophies instead.
On to non-mushy stuff. The tone of this warm hearted poem is full of hope and faith to see a past love again. This really takes me back, but I must refuse, there is work to be done and promises to keep and literally work to be done before I sleep. An example of the tone can be a sample of your poem that I had analyzed: “Your memory, like my shadow, will follow, Throughout my life until eternity.” This could be saying that the memories of Amelie will never diminish in the heart and soul of Mr. Donoso. Usually there is another love that sometimes sneaks in! But like I said in my blog earlier: nothing can ever replace the special moments between two people. But what do you mean when you said: “Like a bird I must be set free; To fly out beyond the sun,; Or else return into your arms because you are the one.” Oh, could you be the one saying good bye to her? That’s why you said “I must be free”. OK never mind. I am somewhat shocked at this early bird that took my worm! Amanda swooped down and snatched that thang! Sadly, I don’t understand what she is trying to achieve by picking three or four lines out of the poem and just commenting them. I think we’re supposed to do a lot more than that, Amanda! However, I respect her punctuality with the assignment given to the Honors Students (trying to be nice). I don’t really agree with what she said about the reason why you had to let the girl go. “Another way is the death of someone. I think this because you say that just let me go free and I think that the person is dying [and] basically telling the person that it is [their] time to be gone.” Or maybe she’s right? I’ll probably won’t know that answer until I ask. So, what was truly going on between you two, huh? Were there some problems back at home? The way the poem is written, it doesn’t sound like there were any relationship issues. Anyway, thanks for bringing the good poems back!

How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I think that this line affects me the most because I have been hurt from someone telling me good-bye. It’s not just some little pain. OH MY GOD! It is that feeling in your stomach where you want to throw up but it’s not exactly that. It’s this big knot in your throat where it keeps you from breathing correctly. The feeling of not having that someone special in your life can literally kill a person depending how strong that relationship is; Maybe not literally kill but suck out all the energy from that lonely person to a point where they don’t want to do anything anymore. Once someone dear to you leaves you, or dies, there’s that missing space in your heart, like a hole, and nothing can fill that space. They’re irreplaceable. I noticed from my last relationship that NOTHING is ok once they leave. Nobody can make anything ok. The only person that can make everything ok and bring you that joy is that one person that left you. Sure if you really, honestly tried to move on and get on with your life you can do it, but it’s not easy, everything is so much harder…
I don’t think that the tone of the poem is sad at all. I think the narrator is happy in a way, not that he’s leaving his significant other, but just joyful for some reason. I think it’s because of how much joy that other person brought to his life, he’s thankful for all of that; and hopefully she won’t forget him. If he is to return to her that’s because she’s the one…just like that quote that goes like this: “if you really love someone set them free, if they come back, you know it’s meant to be.”
I like this poem very much; I just don’t like the fact at the end where he says:
“Or else return into your arms because you are the one.”
I’m just scared for the girl that he’s leaving because you can’t just leave someone like that; hurt them, then expect that maybe one day to come back. Yeah, it happens all the time, people leaving others and then coming back; not only boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, but also parents and their kids. So many parents leave their kids then one day expect to come back, or the other way around where the kids leave and come back after a while. I wish that people could understand that the world SHOULD not work like that. You shouldn’t lose something to be able to realize its value. Unfortunately, that’s how we humans function; we make the mistake then realize it’s a mistake, AFTER we made it.
“Your memory, like my shadow, will follow…”
This (I think) is a simile because it’s comparing her memory to his shadow, that it will always be with him.
I don’t agree with the first commenter when she said that it could be cheating and that’s he’s leaving her. I don’t think it has nothing to do with that. He’s leaving her for some reason other than that; I think that it could be because he wants to find himself first, learn more about himself and the world, and maybe this “break” is good, because if it’s meant to be, like he said, they’ll once again reunite.

Goodbye
Line:
How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes.
I like this poem a lot Mr. Donoso because it shows how much the writer loves this woman that even before he says goodbye it already hurt him just by thinking about it. The tone of this poem doesn’t really seem sad but happy since it made him remember the good time and surprises during their relationship. A line of figurative language I like was “Like a bird I must be set free To fly out beyond the sun, Or else return into your arms because you are the one.” which means that he should be set free to met new people and if not to return to her because she the one he wants to be with. I agree with Amanda when she says” One is that he man was cheated on by the woman and he wants her to let him go. Another way is the death of someone. I think this because you say that just let me go free and I think that the person is dying a basically telling the person that it is there time to be gone. So let them go at peace.”
Goodbye
“So in this smile I want you to know that in my heart you’ll always be.” This is very true with a simple tear or smile you can show a lot of emotion. You don’t have to physically say something, but smiling at someone you love will immediately show them the love you feel for them. When you are in love you always smiling it is a moment of happiness. “Your memory, like my shadow, will follow, throughout my life until eternity.” This says that you will never forget this person no matter how much it hurts you to let them go you will never forget them and they will always live in your heart. Sort of how you feel for the people you love who pass away. You will never forget them and they will always be an important part of your life. It also shows that you are very emotionally attached to this person and it’s hurting you to let go but it’s something you feel has to be done. I really like this poem because I believe in loving people no matter where they are how far they live. Even if they are no longer in your life you still care because they have made an impact on your life. I strongly agree with Anna the feeling of being hurt by love is very painful it stops you from breathing correctly.
WOW! I really like this poem. As soon as I read it I felt like someone was felling the same exact way I am feeling rite now. Rite now I am having a tough time and I feel like I have to say goodbye but I don’t want it to hurt.
“ How much is it supposed to hurt
when I say goodbye?”
When I read that I knew at that moment that I was going to really relate to this poem. Also I new that this poem was going to be about saying goodbye to the one you love.
There is really nothing bad I have to say about this poem. I feel that everything really blended good and that and the message was sent very clear. I think that this poem is talking about that a man that has to say goodbye to the one he loves, but he doesn’t want to because he knows it is going to be hard. Also he says that when he goes away he will never forget her and there will always be a place in his heart for her. I would have to say that the best part in the poem would have be the last line, when he basically says that he goes back to her because he realizes that she is the one.
I strongly agree with what Nicole said. In the poem its says,” So in this smile I want you to know that in my heart you’ll always be.” I agree with Nicole because it is true that just that way you smile at a person can tell how you feel about them. You don’t always have to say I love you or goodbye bye telling them, the look on that persons face can explain everything
Wow this poem is my favorite by far. I agree with d_v_n when he said I am stricken with the painful memories of an unconnected relationship between one of my past loves. I liked this poem because this poem touched me so I even cried. A poem that touches me so that I even cry means I know it was good. I can relate to this poem so well having past relationships that ended on bad notes or even the hardest part of the end of a relationship. Goodbye means so much more, when your saying your final goodbyes to a person it is like so indescribable. Your hurt whither you did the breaking up or if you were broke up with, because in the end you know it is over. You maybe friends with this person afterward or you may not. In the end it is saying goodbyes to a future with the person. I must say that anybody I may have use to have a relationship with I haven’t spoken to in a long time and this poem floods back so many old memories I almost had forgotten. Like the line said “I haven’t even said it yet,” means that the poet knows the time has come to say good bye but it is already killing them to think of it. It hurts to get so close to a person and have to say good bye to a person or end it for any reason. It hurts because you realize when you’re going to say goodbye all the happy memories you had with this person floods in your head. You realize that those moments you use to live for aren’t going to happen anymore, and it nearly kills you. Like everything that makes us happy we don’t want to end but sometimes they have to. Like the simile that says, “Like a bird I must be set free.” Meaning the poet knows his love one wants to not let go but he himself is like a caged bird that needs to spread his wings and fly. The author’s tone of voice is sad. You see this by how tears are rushing to his eyes and that he must say goodbye. Goodbyes are never an easy thing to do. To shut the book and start a new chapter in your life is a big jump. Some people take goodbyes easier than others, but I am one of those people who take it hard. In the end everyone must say goodbye. Wither it be a break up with someone, a passing away or even moving on to college our lives are changing. We can’t stop time, just like we can’t catch moonbeams and store them away. Change is always there and as change continues we continue to have to say goodbye.
Title: Goodbye
Line: So in this smile I want you to know
That in my heart you’ll always be.
What a powerful thing to say Mr. Donoso. Literally when I came upon this line I had got the goose bumps. The line that I analyzed was beautiful. Agreeing with Nicole, with just a simple smile you could show someone how much you really love somebody. There is no need for diamonds or a cruise around the world (would be nice though) to show someone how much you appreciate and care for them. It’ll show how much there worth to you, because if they mean the world to you, you wouldn’t much care about the things you get but the butterflies you get every time you see him/her. No matter the distance between you and that special someone you can show and feel the love between both lovers; like two individuals I know. Another line that really caught my attention was “Your memory, like my shadow, will follow, throughout my life until eternity.” I see this line as If the poet is in fact letting her go and Is stating that even though she is gone he will always remember her and the special moments they’ve had.
I probably said this a million times, but this is my absolute favorite poem. I’ve probably read this poem more than 3 times and made me quiver. No lie this poem really got to me and made me realize things about myself (personal things) that I hadn’t noticed till now. You can tell by the tone that the poet really loved and appreciated the other person. In addition to that, this was way better than the sonnet. You really put in a lot of emotion into this poem and that’s what I like in poems, I like to feel and relate to them.
Goodbye
“So in this smile I want you to know; That in my heart you’ll always be.” This poem is simply amazing. It truly captures every ounce of feelings that need to be expressed at a moment like yours. After reading this poem I began to finally understand all the pain people go through when leaving their loved one. The line that was previously stated was my favorite part of the poem because it directly tells your woman that even though you need to move on with your life, she’ll never be replaced or unloved. It made me think about how you don’t necessarily need to be in a relationship in order to love the person. This is a concept that many people don’t realize. The tone of this poem is definitely loving yet sad. “But hush, my Love, and let me be; The time to say goodbye has come.” This greatly displays the tone; it shows the love and affection you felt for this woman and how you’re sad about letting her go. Throughout the entire piece of art a lot of figurative language can be found. However my most favorite form of figurative language that can be found is a metaphor. It says, “To fly out beyond the sun.” In actuality one can never fly, much less past the sun. The sun is thousands of miles away and our bodies simply aren’t equipped with wings. However the underlying meaning is well captured; the statement means that you must go to different places and discover many new things. Once again, I absolutely adore your writing. Prior to your class, I hated poetry with a passion yet you’ve shown me that poetry can actually be quite beautiful and that it’s a great way to express yourself. I agree with Nicole Martinez when she said, “I really like this poem because I believe in loving people no matter where they are how far they live.” I can relate with my family. I moved from central New York to South Florida which meant I left my entire family behind. Perhaps the one I miss the most is my cousin Katie. We were always two peas in a pod. I feared that moving down here would impact our friendship but miraculously it has only made our friendship stronger. I think Ms. Poulain is an extraordinary lucky to have a man like you care so much about her.
“How much is it supposed to hurt when I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet and I already feel the tears in my eyes.”
I really like this poem because it shows how much the author loves and cares for his woman. The quote above shows that the author really loves is woman because just thinking of saying goodbye to her really hurts the author; it hurts him so much that he starts to shed tears. I think that they are two tones to this poem. In some parts of the poem, the author is sad and in other parts, he is happy. The quote above shows the authors’ sadness. Before the author says goodbye then shed tears is when he is sad and in this quote these past few moments have been the best, and the credit can only fall on you” the author is happy that he had some good times with his love.
While reading this poem is spotted a line of figurative language when the author said “Like a bird I must be set free to fly out beyond the sun or else return into your arms because you are the one.” I think that mean the author and his love should go their separate ways and meet new people. If there is no one that they love as much as each other then they know that they are meant to be.
I agree with Amanda when she said that this poem was touching because it was. It expressed how the author really feels about his love. The change in emotions throughout the poem was what really made it interesting to read.
The lines “How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes,”
show how hard it is to tell someone good-bye. You don’t even have to say it, just know its coming and you already feel bad about it. I think we all have felt this way, whether it be for a loved one, a friend or family member. Regardless how they leave, just that they do leave for one reason or another. I like this poem; it is one of my favorites I’ve read because I can relate to this a lot. It is hard to say good-bye, I just had to go through that with a friend I’ve known for some years. She is still within my heart, and shall never be forgotten, but it was hard when the time for the good-bye came. Even though it did not have a set time for it, it just happened over some time, and it brought tears to my eyes for some time. So not all good-byes are said with those words or words at all. I agree with Anna’s comment about this line. It is like a big knot within your throat, which is stopping you from breathing naturally.
An example of figurative language in this poem is in the line “Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,” he’s not really a bird that must be set free. He can not fly, without a plane of some sort. Though he means by this that he needs to go on, be free of what is keeping him caged up, a feeling or a person.
“Good-Bye”
I enjoyed this poem a lot, and when I read this poem it made me think about how when my grandmother died my mother was all sad for the first few months and day by day she understands that she has to set her feelings free but not forget them always keep them in her heart. This line “You’ll remember me like you do sunrises. But hush, my Love, and let me be the time to say goodbye has come .Like a bird I must be set free to fly out beyond the sun, Or else return into your arms because you are the one.” This also refers back to my mother because she believes that my grandmother never left it’s her soul that was set free and everything the sunrises she thanks God and says good morning to her mom because she says the sunrise reminds her of her mother bright and nice to watch. I noticed in the poem you used similes such as” Your memory, like my shadow, will follow, throughout my life until eternity.” In this line your comparing how her love will always follow you like your reflection in the sidewalk because it will always follow you no matter what because you will always have a shadow and you will always have her love behind you. The second simile is “The time to say goodbye has come.
Like a bird I must be set free To fly out beyond the sun ” this compares how you must move on and explore the rest of the world or not just be tied downed to be optimistic. The tone can be determined in “How much is it supposed to hurt When I say goodbye? I haven’t even said it yet and I already feel the tears in my eyes. These past few moments have been the best, And the credit can only fall on you. I wish to say so many things,” I say this because already you are starting out feeling bad because you haven’t said bye yet and its all ready hurting you. This also says how the narrator and his spouse shared good times together because it said “ the few moments have been the best” but what I can’t pull from this is that have the narrator spent a little while with the person or have they spent so much time to where every moment is not exciting. Over all I wouldn’t say I loved this poem but I enjoyed it because I related to it and understood it and I like things I can understand. I agree with Nicole because I liked how she stated “Even if they are no longer in your life you still care because they have made an impact on your life” because as I reread the poem that statement is exactly explaining the impact that person made on you to where you will keep her in your heart and want her to be like your shadow and follow you forever.
“Goodbye”
After reading this poem, it came to me that this poem was about losing someone who was very important in your life and being very hurt and upset about it. “How much is it supposed to hurt when I say goodbye? I haven’t even said it yet and I already feel the tears in my eyes.” This line made me realize it had to do with something in a relationship. During the whole poem you are talking about your love for this woman and in the end you losing her. I can relate a lot to this poem because I just got out of a relationship where I was hurt and still am. I had so much love for this one boy and in the end I lost him as a best friend and boyfriend. When you lose someone you care about so much you really don’t know what to do or how to react. You always want to make things better and wish it never happened. This poem could also relate so someone when they had passed away. You might of not have gotten enough time to tell them your goodbyes and your really missing them right now. “These past few moments have been the best, And the credit can only fall on you. I wish to say so many things, But the time and option of words are few”, this line explains the tone of the poem. The author is feeling down and gloomy. But also he realizes he was happy when he was spending his time with that special someone and those were the best times for him. At other times he might be feeling emotionless because he doesn't know what to say. ” Like a bird I must be set free to fly out beyond the sun”, this line shows figurative language because you can’t really fly in reality and also you can’t go beyond the sun with just flying. In all honest opinion I loved this poem and it has been one of the best. People who are going through heartbreaks like me and people who have lost someone they cared about know how to relate to this poem. It also showed me that there are people going through the same thing as you and that you aren’t alone when it comes to this subject. The poem was very touching and it made me think of me and my situation. Another thing I liked about the poem were the descriptive words. You went into detail about how to you felt and also by reading your work, people could imagine it. I agreed with Anna when she said that the poem wasn’t about cheating because it wasn’t. Maybe he just wanted a break or some space to think about things and in the end they would eventually reunite. Also I agreed with Anna that this poem wasn’t expressing little pain and that it was a pain that was killing someone inside. I think this is true because when you go through a heartbreak or lost a loved one you feel like just breaking down every time you think about that person. But in the end of it all I really liked this poem. When it comes to the mushy gushy stuff guys aren’t the ones to be writing about it and expressing it. But when I read your poetry it makes me realize that not all the guys are the same and there are guys out there that aren’t afraid to show how they feel. Good job, Mr.Donoso!
Goodbye
"How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?"
This line pretty much illustrates what the tone of the poem is by asking a question to the reader about how they will feel when they leave. The tone of the poem is a sad but yet loving tone because the author is leaving but at the same time wants to let he/she know that they will always be in their heart.
The figurative language I have found in this poem is a metaphor which states,"Like a bird I must be set free To fly out beyond the sun,". Nobody or bird that I yet to meet can fly past the sun, as well as earths atmosphere. What the author is trying to say with this metaphor is that it is time for he/she to move on to bigger greater things but if not they must return back to the arms of the one they love. This metaphor really explained the point that the author was trying to get through.
This poem by far is one of the poems that have caught my interest. It is deep, and really shows what happens when someone says goodbye. It explains how its going to feel when the author says "I haven’t even said it yet, And I already feel the tears in my eyes." it also explains how it felt while they were here when the author says "These past few moments have been the best, And the credit can only fall on you.". This poem really makes me thing about losing the one I love and trying to move on but coming back because I cant find someone else like them with the memories we shared. "I wish to say so many things, But the time and option of words are few." This line made me think of all the good memories I had with someone but when the time has come to leave, they're isn't enough time to reminisce on them.
I agree with "crazygurl" when she says, "Goodbyes are never an easy thing to do. To shut the book and start a new chapter in your life is a big jump.". Saying goodbye and moving on is one of the hardest things to do when you really care about someone. It's already hard enough to say goodbye, but opening another chapter is also hard because people are scared this next chapter wont be as worth while as the last one.
This is a very good poem Mr. Donoso it really captures how someone feels when they are moving on. Keep up the good work, like always.
Saying goodbye is never easy to the one you love, saying this one simple word is harder than anyone can think. Sometimes you have to say goodbye but, their memories will stay along with your memory, telling you new things and teaching you that a early relation-ship can be painful in a way. I agree with crazygurl about how people have to say goodbye when they have to move on be it by moving away, or going off to college but may one day return to that person. The lines,
Your memory, like my shadow, will follow,
Throughout my life until eternity.
is say how their memory will always be with you, until the world is no longer what it is to you… Life can never stay the same, people change slowly over time and this can make people say goodbye more often since people can see thing differently as they grow older and get more insights on life. The tone of this poem is to open your mind to the world then you can choose to return to the one you love or to find a new love like the lines, Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,
Or else return into your arms because you are the one.
I like this poem because it tells how hard saying goodbye can be since you may never see the person again or think that you made a grave mistake since you might have been too rash. What I mean by this is many people don’t think what they have done rather it’s just a simple word that cannot hurt anyone, they hoped that this is true but it isn’t a simple word can hurt anymore even if you don’t know it.
Asssignment 7 Matthew Madonia
"How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say good-bye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes."
These few lines sum up the whole poem while at the same time setting the mood. "I haven't even said it yet, and I already feel the tears in my eyes." It sets the whole tone, which is sad, in the very beginning which is a very important thing to accomplish. It doesn't leave me guessing as to what the author is feeling when he is writing this.
The tone of the poem is sad. As I have covered in the previous paragraph the author sets the tone very early. I would be sad also if I had to say good-bye to someone, either because a relationship was ending or because someone has died or moved away.
I like this poem a lot. it reminds me of my eighth grade graduation. I spent so much time with those people just to say good-bye. I haven't had a heart breaking relationship yet so this is the closest way I can relate to it. I spent my whole life with half of my graduating class. We were together since pre-school and then one day our paths in life went separate ways. It's hard to say good-bye to the people you love.
I agree with Sarto when he said,"It really captures how someone feels when they are moving on" I have not had the opportunity to experience a relationship that it hurts as much as you describe to say good-bye, but I have lost family members, and some of my best friends have moved away, and like I said before, the poem reminds me of my eighth grade graduation, and I still remember how much it hurt to say good-bye that night, but then I remembered that I could still call them in the morning so I guess it wasn't really good-bye. Great poem Mr. D.
"How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say good-bye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes."
These lines mean the most to me because they set the mood for the poem. When he says "I already feel the tears in my eyes" it sets a dramatic mood that makes the tone of the poem love. Also when the author says "Like a bird I must be set free" he is comparing himself to a bird, which must be set free. Have you ever heard the saying "If you love something set it free, If it was meant for you it shall come back" this is the example he is trying to use. You can love something but in order to see if it loved you back, you set it free, if it comes back to you that mean that the love remained, and you were meant to be. I like this poem because again it describes love , the poems I like talk about not just love but how long it lasts, I know that love does not last long do to my parents, who did not last long.....
I don't agree with the first blogger when they say a guy is cheating. The poem does not mean that, it means to give you the perspective of someone trying to find out if they are to be with that other. They are both trying to figure out if they were "truly" meant to be together.

“How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet”
This is a very relative statement and it ties into that thing that you tell us sometimes about the glass already being broken. You know that it will not last forever, so that you might as well enjoy it while you have it. There was this one time when I was about 6, my cousin came down from Chicago for the summer, and he was leaving. I cried and cried, but my dad told me that he would be back again, and if I don’t think about it, I will see him before I know it. Come to think of it though, I haven’t seen him since.
” So in this smile I want you to know
That in my heart you’ll always be.”
“These past few moments have been the best,
And the credit can only fall on you.”
I believe that the tone of this poem is appreciative and reminiscent, because even though the author is saying goodbye, they still want to keep the person’s memory, and they are also bringing up events from the past
” Your memory, like my shadow, will follow,
Throughout my life until eternity.”
The figurative language I picked up was when the author compared this person’s memory with a shadow with a simile. When you walk down the street, your shadow follows you, and no matter what you do, it will not leave (unless its pitch black).
“Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,”
I also picked up another simile here where the author is compared to a bird and needs to be let go. If you see a bird flying off into the sunset, it is not held captive, and the author wants to be like that also.
I think I caught a hyperbole also, because bird cannot literally fly past the sun.
“Promise me if I go too far
You’ll remember me like you do sunrises.”
This is not a general simile, and is quite specific, because this one is implying that the subject here remembers sunrises, and the author wants to be also.
“It reminds me of my eighth grade graduation. I spent so much time with those people just to say good-bye.
I agree with Matt because this poem also reminded me of my eight grade graduation, and I also had a hard time saying goodbye to everyone, just like the author in this poem.
I liked this poem a lot, but there are a lot more things that can be set free that is not a bird. This comparison has been used so many times, that it is beginning to get played out. The contents of a dump truck are freed when the truck dumps the garbage, particles are released when you sneeze, and your hair is freed from your head when you get a ha
“Goodbye”
“How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes.” This line means that you love her so much, that you don’t want to leave her and have tears in your eyes already, even before you have told her goodbye. This poem has a poetic and thoughtful tone. An example of this: “But hush, my Love, and let me be
The time to say goodbye has come.
Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun,
Or else return into your arms because you are the one.” Figurative language in this poem is “Like a bird I must be set free
To fly out beyond the sun.” This means you wish to experience the world and others so you are sure she is the one. I like this poem because it obviously means something to you. I agree with matt when he said “I would be sad also if I had to say good-bye to someone, either because a relationship was ending or because someone has died or moved away.” It would be sad to have to leave someone without notice.

Goodbye
Ahh this has to be the sweetest thing I have ever heard
Let me start by saying that I liked the opening lines
“How much is it supposed to hurt, when I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet, and I already feel the tears in my eyes.”
This shows how much this person must have meant to you for just the very thought of saying good bye brings tears to your eye one doesn’t even need to know the history between you and the one you write this poem to this line alone explains it all it shows that it must have been something special.
I can see that this is a free verse poem with occasional rhymes which I think is good.
1 metaphor in this story that stands out to me is “Like a bird I must be set free, to fly out beyond the sun. In this line the writer compares a bird and its flight to him being set free and released from his love or lost love as you say good bye.
“This poem could also relate so someone when they had passed away. You might of not have gotten enough time to tell them your goodbyes and your really missing them right now.” When kenrick says this I agree with him a lot because the feeling that are described in the poem can also be comparable to loosing a loved one you feel these feelings of sadness and depression but at the same time love .This was a very thoughtful. I can tell that this Amelie Poulain that the poem is dedicated to meant a lot to you. Good Job ~your favorite student Sheriece~
The line “your memory, like my shadow, will follow, throughout my life until eternity.” really touched me, it made me feel as if I were in the writer’s shoes. With this line I can imagine how close and how important these people were too each other, so close that they would stay by forever as a shadow never leaving each others side and still looking out for each other. It’s really one of my favorite lines in the poem.
The tone of the poem sounds too me in two ways. In a way it sounds sad because it seems as if it really hurt the person too say goodbye to the other when it says “I haven’t even said it yet and I already feel the tears in my eyes.” The tone also sounds thankful and happy. Thankful to have found somebody this important in their life that has impacted them so much they never want too let go and of course happy because they found that person.
The line “like a bird I must be set free to fly out beyond the sun” I believe is a hyperbole because flying out beyond the sun is an exaggeration and nobody can really fly beyond it unless you’re maybe in a rocket which is not mentioned. :] I think the lines “you’ll remember me like you do sunrises” and “like a bird I must be set free” would be example of similes because although they don’t use the word as its making a comparison between themselves and other objects. The word hush is onomatopoeia because it is a sound being made as well as the word.
I personally love this poem because I could feel the feeling put into it. I could feel myself in the person’s shoes and how hard it must be to say goodbye. This poem was full of feeling and very heartfelt. I feel I can relate too it and other people as well because goodbyes really are every hard when two people happen too be so close. I really can feel at this point this poem is the most relatable thing too me because of the situation I’m in with my boyfriend we’ve been having many problems lately after a year of dating and many years of friendship. I’m scared too say goodbye and let go because of the fear of loosing that friendship and hurting both him and myself. This poem really made me think about this situation and how hard it is.
I agree with the comment left by Anna when she says she doesn’t like the line “Or else return into your arms because you are the one.” The point she makes is very true you just can’t leave a person like that and then return without it having any affect on them. Think about all the pain you’re causing that person simply because maybe you’re trying to find yourself. If that person was truly the one you wouldn’t leave them to begin with.
After reading this poem a few times I agreed with Amanda, when she said that this poem makes you think in two perspectives. When I read this poem the first time, I instantly related it to an experience I had with an old boyfriend. When the author said, “These past few moments have been the best, and the credit can only fall on you” I thought of how wonderful the relationship was, and then, “Like a bird I must be free to fly out beyond the sun” was my longing not to be in a tied down serious relationship. Then I read the last line, “Or else return into your arms because you are the one” made me think of the old saying, “if it’s meant to be it’ll happen” and how I applied that to what I thought of my ex.
When I read the poem again, I found a meaning much further than something I could ever relate to-the death of a loved one. I liked the line “the time to say goodbye has come” because the author has found acceptance in the situation, and is moving on. The following lines, “Like a bird I must be set free to fly out beyond the sun”, unlike what I originally thought, could be the author metaphorically moving on, or freeing himself from the mourning depression chained onto him by his lover’s death. This poem brings about a solemn tone at the very beginning that sets the mood for the poem, “how much is it supposed to hurt when I say goodbye”. I liked this poem because (like every other poem I’ve read by the author) the emotion was captured perfectly, and written beautifully. I also liked this poem because it was very thought-provoking in the controversial meanings of freely saying goodbye, and being forced to say goodbye.
This poem from the title made me think about a Chris Brown song in relation with the poem. One type of figurative language is the use of hyperbole in this line"That in my heart you’ll always be" the poet doesn't mean that the person they talking about will literally be inside their heart.
The tone of the poem was a man who doesn't want to say goodbye but has to as it says in that line "But hush, my Love, and let me be
The time to say goodbye has come"
I liked this poem because it was original and cool.
I agree with Sheriece because it does bring tears to the eye it does show that the person is important the writer because they cried just thinking about leaving them. I don't know why I didn't come up with that thought.
This poem made me think a lot of the worst part of a relationship, the break up. This poem had me thinking of the couple of times when my girlfriends broke up with me. Instead of just saying goodbye, we instead got into fights. I regret those fights because I miss my friendships with these girls that I had, before we went out. I also regret them because the memories I have of those precious days together, stay with me like shadows and it’s hard to not talk to someone when you had such a good time with them.
When I read the poem it reminded me of the hard times I had in which I couldn’t say goodbye. The line, but the time and option of words are few, especially reminded me of when I went back to Venezuela after over four years for the first time. More specifically it brought me back to the time when the cab was pulling up to take me to the airport and time was now ticking so goodbyes were quick. Still it makes me feel happy, though I had to say goodbye once again, the fact that I got to spend time there and made the goodbye harder only made the next time I went even better. I really liked how the poem brought me back to those times.
The tone of the poem is very straightforward and optimistic. The author with the last line says that returning to his love is an option and that he likes the idea of it because if he does return it means that she is the one for him. The poem is straightforward right from the start. The author expresses his grief for having to depart from his loved one. With time being short and the author already feeling the pain of a hard goodbye before even saying the dreaded word he opens up and says straightforward what she means to him. Like saying in my heart you’ll always be, until eternity and thank you for who you are without deviating from the point.
Examples of figurative language include a simile that compares the memory of the author’s love to the way a shadow follows a person. The author says, your memory, like my shadow, will follow, meaning that like a shadow his memory of her will follow. Another simile is that the author wishes her to remember him like she does sunrises. Since sunrises are easy to remember and in vivid detail about how beautiful they are the author only wishes for her to remember their time together in the same way and as vividly. A metaphor in the semi last line says to fly out beyond the sun, it doesn’t mean to take a space ship and fly but that the author plans on going far. Before this the author implements that he must be set free like a bird. He means that he must go and go on his own now. What wendy s :]] said about being able to feel herself in the person’s shoes I can agree with. I was able to put myself in the same position and feel the feeling as well especially when I read the lines, I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes, because it was exactly how I felt the words were on my tongue yet I hadn’t said them and I felt there effects.
“Goodbye”
“How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?
I haven’t even said it yet
And I already feel the tears in my eyes.”
These lines allowed me to reflect on how difficult it is to say goodbye to someone you care about greatly. I believe the poet is speaking about leaving his love behind for better opportunities, and many people can relate to this situation. These lines made me think of how difficult it is losing that special person in your life, whether they’ve died or they’ve moved away, it hurts even before they’ve left you; just the thought of that person not being by your side brings an unimaginable pain. These lines make me feel hurt in a way, because I think of the situation whereby I couldn’t handle even thinking of losing the person that’s most special to me.
The tone of this poem is appreciative in a way, and somewhat melancholy, because such goodbyes are never delightful. The poet is also admiring his love and everything they’ve shared together. For example, the lines, “These past few moments have been the best, and the credit can only fall on you” prove this. The poet is saying that the love they’ve had together in the past few moments have been like no other, it’s been incredible; the poet is thanking his lover in a way, saying that it’s because of her that their love has been so great. This poem also becomes hopeful towards the end, with the line, “Or else return into your arms because you are the one”. This line goes along with the statement, “If it was meant to be, it’ll be”, because the poet is saying that he’ll go out and set himself free, but through everything, if that person is really his soul mate, then they’ll be together eventually.
“Like a bird I must be set free”
This line is an example of a simile. The poet is saying that just as a bird is set out of its cage in order to fly free in the outside air, he is being set free from his cage as well. I believe the poet is saying he’s looking for better opportunities, in order to become successful and follow his dreams, he is leaving his love. The poet is looking to fly on his own in a sense, to not be held up by other people.
Yes, I very much enjoyed reading this poem. I have to say it’s one of my favorites by you, Mr. Donoso. I can relate to this poem, because it’s saying that sometimes you need to make choices-- heartbreaking choices—in order to better yourself. Sometimes you have to let go of the people you love in order to set yourself free from their impediments, or maybe just to follow your dreams. I find the most admiration towards the last line; I like the message it conveys: that if the person is right for you, then you need to do what’s right for yourself, and if it’s meant to be, it’ll be. As long as you never forget that person, then life or God perhaps, will bring them back to you.
I disagree with Amanda when she says that the poet could be cheating on his love. I don’t think that could be true, because what I gather from the poem is that the poet loves this person dearly, and the only reason he would leave her is if he had to. I believe the reason he is leaving her is not because he’s cheating, but because he needs to, for his own person betterment.
“How much is it supposed to hurt
When I say goodbye?”
Let me tell you, Mr. Donoso, that the pain is immense. If it hurts me, being young with not so much experience, I can only imagine how painful it is to you being a grown man. Like other anonymous writers have said, one doesn’t need to say goodbye. All one needs to feel tremendous pain is to think about it.
In my opinion, the tone of the poem is a combination of gloominess and thankfulness. The gloomy part is seen when you wrote, “I haven’t even said it yet/ And I already feel the tears in my eyes.” However, you are glad that she was in your life (“Thank you so much for who you are/ And for making me live with so many surprises.”)
The lines, “Like a bird I must be set free/ To fly out beyond the sun,/ Or else return into your arms because you are the one,” is a simile. Humans are definitely not birds, and consequently, can’t “fly out beyond the sun.” What you mean is that you will go away and experience other things. If you find that you don’t feel those same potent (vocabulary word!) feelings with someone else, then you will come back to her because she is the one made for you.
Mr. Donoso, you make it so hard for me to make up my mind about which of your poems is my favorite. But, I guess I can have more than one. I totally loved it. For me it is very rare to find a poem that transmits the emotions of the author to me. Well, I’ll say that this poem is so well written and realistic that it left me pensive when I finished reading the last line. The opening was perfect because at once the reader starts thinking about how to answer that question, “How much is it supposed to hurt when I say goodbye?” I strongly agree with Wendy when she wrote, “I personally love this poem because I could feel the feeling put into it.”
Love is beautiful; I will never deny that. But sometimes I ask myself, “Why does it have to be complicated at times?”
